“How I learned to dance twice as fast and twice as well as the rest of my class, without even going to another dance studio…”

Posted by: Jon on March 18, 2009 3:10pm

Hi, I am Jon, and I’m from San Francisco, CA. I wanted to share my dance success story with you. I’m no natural born salsa dancer or anything like that. I’m just a guy who discovered a simple system to learn to dance extremely fast that works better than anything else I’ve ever tried (and I’ve tried quite a lot). It doesn’t matter what type of dance you want to learn or where you live… All the top-rated dance classes I tried were nothing in comparisson to this new method I tried. Hopefully my story inspires you to get the same results as me…

I hope my story can help you not just to learn to dance, but also stay healthy, and feel better about yourself. In the past, I’ve really struggled with my dance skills, and I know the frustrating feeling of being unable to shake off one of my two left feet. But less than 10 weeks ago, I realized a method that’s just so easy and simple that anyone can do it, and anyone could have thought of it… It was so obvious! Staring me right in the face the whole time!

By complimenting my salsa classes at the local dance studio with instructional salsa dance videos, I found that I could double my learning speed as well as my skills. Not only did I become a tighter and more elegant dancer, I also felt more comfortable and confident when social dancing in the clubs. Since then my life’s completely changed. Recently, I’ve been the happiest and healthiest I’ve ever been! By using videos from DanceCrazy and The Dance Store I totally revolutionized the way I practiced, learned, and progressed as a dancer.

It’s pretty obvious, but it seriously works wonders. And if you haven’t gone to classes and then watched and practiced with an instructional dance video, then you’re only preventing yourself from being the best dancer you can be.

What does it take to open up a dance studio?

29th September

I want to open up a dance studio but I don’t know where to start. Any ideas?

Start small. Borrow or rent a space and offer a few classes. As you get more classes, lease your own space.

A community center might have space that you can use one or twice a week (possibly for a fee).

Word will get out, and you will grow.

But don’t just sit back and wait for word to get out. You have to get the word out with flyers and ads.

Don’t just lease your own space and think you can fill it unless you have a lot of money to spend on rent and advertising.

Where can I get a copy of a Fred Astaire dance studio bronze syllabus?

10th September

Looking for a copy of a Fred Astaire dance studio bronze syllabus. Am thinking of entering into the bronze program after finishing up Social Foundations here soon. Thanks!

Your instructor may give you the checksheet, but if you’re looking for the breakdown book, they guard those things closely. The chain studios aren’t open like DVIDA. The checksheet lists the names of the figures, but they tend not to be very revealing. For instance, one of the bronze tango figures is named La Cumparsita, which is the title of an old tango standard bit of music, but tells you nothing about the figure. I’d suggest you keep a journal and write them down as you learn them. When I was a FADS student, I thought I’d never forget the syllabus, but after a few years away from Fred, I can’t remember half.

How much does it cost to run a class in a dance studio per hour?

16th August

I’m just looking for an average cost. I’m starting a Zumba class this fall and I am wondering what the typical rent is per hour at a dance studio. This is for a studio in Wisconsin if it makes any difference?

It depends on what the individual studio owners want.

I teach dance classes at two different studios, neither of which make me pay for using the room, but rather they pay me.
One has the students pay me directly, and the other studio has the administrator pay me by the hour.

When I rented a room at the community center it was $50 a month.

There is also a training facility down the road from me that has a dance room and they charge %20 of the instructors income off classes.

How much would it cost to go into a dance studio and ask them to make up a dance for a song of your choice?

23rd July

Example Songs: Material Girl by Madonna, California Gurls by Katy Perry

And you’ve never been to that dance studio or taken classes there before, thanks!

Choreography takes a good deal of time and energy on the part of the choreographer. Therefore, this is not likely to be a cheap endeavor. If it were me, I would probably charge $300 minimum to choreograph something for someone who was not in my class and whom I had never met.

My advice would be to find someone who teaches choreography workshops in your area. It will be a lot cheaper in the long run if you can learn how to do your own choreography, and it will be your own original work. You’ll feel more accomplished, and have that knowledge under your belt. It’s very useful knowledge for a dancer of any variety to have.

Are there any dance competitions where you can compete in, without being affiliated with a dance studio?

17th July

Please help. I have been searching the internet for days but every dance compeitition that comes up tells you that you have to belong to a dance studio.
So, are there any dance competitions where you can compete in without belonging to dance studio?
If so, can you name one?

I’m almost positive that you can enter some competitions as "independent," which is basically on your own. I’m not sure which comps do that, but maybe you could check out ADA (American Dance Awards). I think they let people enter as independent. Maybe you could call the office of that comp? good luck! :)

can i start my own dance studio when im older?

5th June

Ive been dancing since i was in diapers, a long time in other words. When im older i want to start my own dance studio and stuff. But ive been told that i cant unless i have auditioning experience and what not. Is that true? Like to i have to do something before that, like become a sports team cheerleader or whatever.

You can open your own studio. Don’t listen to what others say. You can do whatever you want. My dream was to always open my own studio and now I’m taking over the studio I grew up in. It’s such an honor and I’m so excited. I hold that studio very near and dear to my heart, and soon it will be mine. I’ve never gone on auditions. I did take dance in college though. And I also am going to the Dance Masters of America teacher training school. I plan on taking a few college classes on business too…just so I can have a bit of a heads up on what I’m doing on the business end of it. I would suggest you do the same. Dance and business in college. And also try teaching some classes at local studios if you can. You might teach a class and decide you hate kids. Good luck! Happy dancing!

What is the best way to build a dance studio?

19th May

I am thinking about building a little dance studio in my basement and I was wondering what things I would need to know like the best flooring, mirrors, barres, etc,.

-How large should the space be on average?
-What brand of floor?
-Is there a special way I should clean the floor?
-Anything else you think I should know? Any tips?

First you will need a sprung or floating floor. You cannot dance on cement. Then marley on top. Your biggest problem is once you put in a sprung floor you loose height and your ceiling is too close for jumps usually. Let me tell you, this is very expensive! If you don’t dance on a sprung or floating floor, you will damage your knees and joints. To learn more about what is involved go to this site. They do have the best prices as well a so-it-yourself- installation instructions.
http://stagestep.com/products.php (The personal flooring is to go over a sprung/floating floor not cement)

Remember, dancing at home you get no corrections and can build bad habits that are hard to break. Instead of spending all this will cost, use the money to take class everyday. It will be cheaper and you will get corrections and become a better dancer than trying on your own.

Singapore Fitness Gyms – Which to Join?

30th April

There are a great deal of fitness gyms located in Singapore and they come in various shapes and sizes, types and even orientations. The fitness bug has definitely hit this tiny little island nation where more and more people are wanting to eat healthy, look great and regain the confidence that they had when they were younger. While this sounds like a by line for selling some of these gyms, the reality is that the potential fitness fanatic has quite a hard time to choose some of the gyms in Singapore. Some of the shiny machines, bright studio lights and winning smiles from the fitness consultants are blinding and somewhat distracting from the truth of the matter.

What do you really need? There is no point plonking down a few thousand dollars for a few years in a yoga gym when you are looking to build some serious muscle mass. While the view might be a motivation in itself, it is a waste of money and a waste of your time. You will never reach your objective in a gym not tailored for what you want to do. The first thing to look at is your fitness goals and what is it you want to do. If you just want to have a quick workout session a few times a week to feel good and see some basic results, then a small neighbourhood gym or even a medium sized club gym would be perfect for this. Singapore itself has a chain of local fitness gyms based in sports stadiums and community clubs that are well equipped and manned by a fitness professional who knows his or her stuff. The equipment is enough for anyone looking for an easy session.

If you are looking for something bigger and better , with a studio for classes then it would be good for you to look at the larger international fitness chains that have shot up in this urban jungle of late. Huge buildings with floors of brand named equipment, anyone will be dazzled by the close harmony grunting and loud rhythmic music pumping from the large studios. These commercial gyms have something for everything – studios with the latest dance/fitness exercise routines, bigger, better and more modern machines to build up muscles, treadmills and fitness climbers to burn the calories – all in a plush environment peppered with large LCD TV’s and music all around. Be prepared to fork out a large price, but normally you get what you pay for and some of these chains have more than one location in Singapore.

There are also specialty gyms in Singapore, like those who focus on water based fitness routines or using weighted dance and fitness routines like Taibo and do away with weighted machines and free standing weights. I suggest if you are already a seasoned lifter or fitness freak to look to other fitness clubs – smaller ones, but if you are green, the advice and fitness training packages from seasoned professionals will far outweigh the price of admission.
