Does anyone know any really good dance studios that offer Jazz Funk?

2nd October

I’ve been wanting to join a dance studio with some really good jazz funk classes near Gurnee or northern Chicago. I haven’t been able to find one though. Does anyone know any dance studios or performing arts centers?

I don’t live anywhere near you, so I’m not sure if I can be much help, but I can try hahaha…
When I typed ‘jazz funk dance gurnee’ and ‘jazz funk dance northern chicago’ into Google, not many results came up. But I’ve found quite a few places where you can take jazz.

STUDIOS IN GURNEE:
1) Dance Theatre of Northern Illinois – http://www.dancetheatre-ni.com/index.html – This studio offers classes in ballet, tap, jazz, modern, hip hop and pointe. Boys only and girls only classes are offered in ballet, tap and jazz.
2) Rhythm Academy of Dance – http://www.rhythmacademy.com/ – This studio offers classes in Highland dance, ballet, poms, salsa, hip hop, jazz and tap.

STUDIOS IN NORTHERN CHICAGO:
1) Lou Conte Dance Studio – http://www.hubbardstreetdance.com/lcds_home.asp – This studio offers classes in ballet, jazz, modern, tap, African, hip hop, Zumba, BeMoved, Pilates, yoga, musical theatre and more.
2) 3rd Street Dance & Theatre Academy – http://www.3streetdance.com/index.html – This studio offers classes in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop and modern/lyrical.

Sorry if I’ve screwed up the locations of any of those. If I were you I would go to Lou Conte Dance Studio, it sounds like the best one. I’m really sorry I couldn’t find you more!

Is it bad to go to two different dance studios at the same time?

29th September

For example if you want to take two classes at one dance studio and three classes at another dance studio on different days? Would that be bad like you’re betraying your studio or something?

It shouldn’t unless you are taking ballet and are a beginner. If the style of ballet being taught is different it could be confusing. Check to see if they are the same style. If they are then you should have no problem. (Vagonova, Balanchine, French, Cecchetti etc.) It shouldn’t matter for any other type of dance.
Betraying your studio? You are paying money to learn how to dance. Better small studios even send their students away to ballet academies when they have outgrown the training in the smaller studio. The ones that hold students back are just in it for the money. They shouldn’t care if you go elsewhere too, if they don’t have the classes for you that you need.

*When you reach a certain level of ballet, it is a good idea to start experiencing different styles of ballet. That is the reasoning behind Summer Intensives. You get to work with different teachers and different styles.

What are the best dance studios in minnesota?

6th July

I got to Stage Door of Performing Arts and i wanted to know what the best dance studios of minnesota are cause i was thinking of leaving.

Zenon’s school, in Minneapolis (located within the Hennepin Center for the Arts) , is a great studio that is very in touch with the modern and jazz. It’s actually very well known across the country. If you’re looking to compete or perform in recitals or shows, this isn’t the studio for you. The school can be taken "open-class" style, where you can pay for a punch card and just take whatever classes you want to. I’d recommend this one if you have a busy schedule and won’t be able to take a constant class. Zenon has a wonderful professional company that you can check out. Definitely take a class or two there. Also, most classes have live musical accompany. I know I’ll be taking most my classes here next season. http://www.zenondance.org/

The Dance Institute is the school attached to Minnesota Dance Theater. It’s ballet based and has a very great pre-professional program. It’s quite on the pricey side, but if your really committed it’s definitely worth it. The Dance Institute is also in the Hennepin Center for the Arts building on a different floor than Zenon. They also have open classes on the weekend, which are great for just bushing up your ballet technique when you’re not currently taking ballet classes. This isn’t a competitive studio. The people taking classes there usually do two shows a year. http://www.mndance.org/

Classical Ballet Academy is the school attached to Ballet Minnesota. They have a location in Woodbury and one in St. Paul. This is a great school, but pretty difficult. Most people dance there 4 times a week or more. If you stick with the school, it’s not too difficult to get into the company. Once again, this isn’t a competitive studio, and they do many shows each year that can be auditioned for. Everyone gets to be in the annual Nutcracker. They also have great summer programs. http://www.balletminnesota.org/

St. Croix Ballet in Stillwater is very good. I’ve never taken classes there, but have friends that do. They are all talented dancers. It is a lot like CBA, but isn’t as strict. They put on two classical shows a year, including their annual nutcracker. This school, however, does not branch off from a company, but it does have a semi-professional youth company. It is not a competitive studio either. http://www.stcroixballet.com/

Alesso’s Dance Spectrum on Grand Avenue is set up a lot like Zenon but is more of a studio that you should stick with for a whole season. It’s a really good school, and it trains everyone from beginners to professional levels. Not competitive. http://www.dancespectrum.com/

I’d recommend all of these if you are just looking to dance for fun. But, if you are looking to dance on a professional level, I’d recommend The Dance Institute (year long classes), Classical Ballet Academy, and St. Croix Ballet.

If you are looking to compete Larkin and Legacy would probably be the best ones to compete with. They seem to always do well in competitions.

I hope I helped, and maybe we’ll be taking classes together soon! :)

Elevation Studios is amazing http://www.elevationstudios.org
I actually live in Torrance and belong to a really good studio out here but I make the drive twice a week for them. They offer adult classes in all styles and levels, hip hop, ballet, jazz, lyrical and modern. Check out the website for sure. And it’s never too late to dance! 21 is super young!
I don’t know if you watch So You Think You Can Dance, but one season they had an 18 year old named Sabra on who only had one year of dance experience and she won the competition. She was amazing! She started dancing at 17! Do what you love and if dancing makes you happy, go for it!
