is being 19yrs old to young to open up a dance studio?

4th February 2010

I really want to open up a dance studio but i feel my age might hinder me from doing so. i have 16 yrs worth of dancing experience… im just worried about my age.

One of the best ways to learn is on the job.

Having struck off on my own too early, I’d recommend anybody to take a job in the field that interests you, learn all you can about the practical and business sides, and build up a network of contacts.

There is a lot of bureaucracy to running any business and college may the best place to learn that but I wasn’t impressed with what I was offered at college, or on subsequent management training sessions. The tutors had no idea of the real world, it was all academic.

You need to go to college and get some small business classes in. Running a dance studio isn’t all about the dance and teacher. You have to know how to operate a business. Billing, taxes, payroll, advertising, managing.
